Aparajita Sarangi gifts 1984 bag to Priyanka Gandhi

Days after Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi made a political statement in Parliament by carrying bags featuring motifs of Palestine and Bangladesh, BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi on Friday gifted Gandhi a bag with ‘1984’, written on it, referencing the year of the anti-Sikh riots.

Following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards, widespread riots broke out against Sikhs in 1984, during which over 2730 people from the community were killed, according to Union Home Ministry data. The Nanavati Commission, appointed to investigate the riots, concluded that Congress leaders including top figures Jagdish Tytler, Sajjan Kumar HKL Bhagat, were responsible for the riots.
