In West Bengal, a political storm has erupted over the Election Commission of India's (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee has accused the ECI and the BJP of targeting prominent figures, including Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, cricketer Mohammed Shami, and actor-politician Dev, by issuing them hearing notices. Banerjee claimed the exercise lacks transparency and insults the state's icons. However, ECI sources clarified that the notice sent to Amartya Sen was the result of a computer-generated error caused by a spelling mistake in his name. 'The incorrect spelling actually caused a mismatch in the computer system, which resulted in a computer generated notice that has been sent to him,' the report noted. The Commission confirmed that the Booth Level Officer (BLO) will resolve the discrepancy, and the Nobel laureate will not be required to appear in person. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari also dismissed the controversy as a technical glitch that should be addressed by the Chief Electoral Officer.
