On the 44th anniversary of Emergency, which was imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee slammed Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday.
Taking the matter on Twitter, Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief said, "Today is the anniversary of the #Emergency declared in 1975. For the last five years, the country went through a âSuper Emergencyâ. We must learn our lessons from history and fight to safeguard the democratic institutions in the country."
On June 25, 1975, Indira Gandhi had declared Emergency in the country for a period of 21 months, which lasted from 1975 to 1977.
