Suspended Trinamool MLA Humayun Kabir's son detained for assaulting father's security guard
Police action followed a complaint filed by the personal security officer, though Kabir denied the allegation and claimed that the bodyguard had instead attacked him, describing the case as politically motivated.

West Bengal Police on Sunday detained Golam Nabi Azad, also known as Robin, the son of suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir, in connection with an alleged assault on his father’s personal security officer (PSO). Police later said the accused was served a notice and released pending investigation.
The police action followed a complaint filed by the PSO, Constable Jumma Khan, though Kabir denied the allegation and claimed that the bodyguard had instead attacked him, describing the case as politically motivated.
According to police, the incident came to light after Constable Khan, who was deployed as Kabir’s PSO, approached Saktipur Police Station on Sunday morning and submitted a written complaint. In the complaint, the constable alleged that Golam Nabi Azad assaulted him when he sought permission to go home.
Police said the alleged incident took place at the ground-floor office of Humayun Kabir and occurred “in front of the general public”.
Following the complaint, police visited Kabir’s residence to inquire into the matter. After a preliminary inquiry, Golam Nabi Azad was identified as the principal accused and detained. Police later clarified that the accused was served a notice and released from the police station as the investigation continues.
Meanwhile, police said an FIR has been registered under non-bailable sections against both Humayun Kabir and his son based on the complaint.
DIGITAL EVIDENCE SEIZED, FORENSIC PROBE PLANNED
Police said the District Cyber Police Station team collected digital evidence from Kabir’s residence. However, due to technical issues, the footage could not be retrieved on-site.
“As the footage could not be accessed, the entire DVR and storage devices will be sent to the Cyber Forensic Laboratory for examination,” police said.
Further investigation is underway, and police said action will be taken based on forensic findings and other evidence.
KABIR DENIES ASSAULT CHARGE, TERMS INCIDENT 'MINOR'
Reacting to his son’s detention, Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) chief Humayun Kabir reiterated that the case was being exaggerated and politically motivated.
“It was a small incident. My PSO Jumma Khan suddenly barged into my office in the morning while I was speaking to my son and demanded leave to go home,” Kabir said. “We asked him to go outside, but he did not. When he kept insisting, we asked him to leave the office. After this, he lodged a complaint and the police detained my son.”
Kabir said he had spoken to senior police officers, including the Beldanga SDPO, and maintained that the matter could be resolved through discussion. “The police can do whatever they want to do. I will talk the matter out with them,” he said.
Earlier, Kabir had warned of protests if what he described as “harsh action” was taken against his family members. Police said the matter remains under investigation.
The development comes weeks after Humayun Kabir, suspended from the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, floated his own political outfit, the Janata Unnayan Party (JUP).
Kabir was suspended from the Trinamool Congress on December 4 after triggering a major controversy by announcing plans to build a Babri Masjid-style mosque in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district ahead of next year’s Assembly elections. He laid the foundation stone for the mosque in Beldanga on December 6, coinciding with the anniversary of the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya.
