What began as a brief halt for passengers to use the toilet on a late-night bus journey turned into a deadly tragedy on the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh, where six people were crushed to death by a speeding tanker in Mathura district.
The accident took place when passengers travelling from Delhi to Kanpur Dehat stepped out of their bus and stood by the roadside.
Moments later, a fast-moving DCM tanker rammed into them, leaving six people dead and one person critically injured.
PASSENGERS GOT DOWN DURING HALT
Police said the bus had stopped on the expressway to allow passengers to relieve themselves.
“At the time of the accident, the bus was stationary and some passengers had stepped out to use the toilet,” a police officer said.
“A speeding DCM vehicle hit the people standing on the roadside.”
The impact caused panic at the spot, with eyewitnesses describing scenes of chaos and distress.
FOUR VICTIMS FROM SAME FAMILY
Officials said that four of the six people who died belonged to the same family.
Relatives of the deceased said the bus was parked when the tanker suddenly crashed into the passengers.
“The bus was standing when the vehicle hit them. Four members of our family died in the accident,” a family member said.
The identities of the victims are being verified.
POLICE, ADMINISTRATION RUSH TO SITE
After receiving information, police teams rushed to the scene and launched rescue operations.
The injured were taken to the hospital for treatment, while the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.
District Magistrate CP Singh confirmed the deaths.
“The accident occurred near milestone 88 under Surir Kotwali. Six people have died, and one person is seriously injured,” he said.
Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar also reached the site to supervise the investigation.
BUS WAS HEADING TO KANPUR DEHAT
Officials said the bus was travelling from Delhi to Kanpur Dehat when the incident occurred.
Traffic on the expressway was disrupted for several hours as emergency teams cleared the damaged vehicle and debris.
Police are examining whether overspeeding or negligence led to the crash.
COMPENSATION FOR VICTIMS’ FAMILIES
The district administration said financial assistance would be provided to the families of those killed.
“The families of the deceased will be given economic help,” officials said.
Further action will be taken after the investigation is completed.
Police said efforts are underway to trace the tanker driver and reconstruct the sequence of events.
