Maharashtra Local Body Election Result Highlights: PM, Amit Shah, Devendra Fadnavis praise Mahayuti's massive win

The parties registered with the SEC bagged four seats, while 28 seats of municipal presidents went to unrecognised registered parties. Five seats were won by Independents, the poll body said.

According to data released by the State Election Commission (SEC), the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged on top by winning 117 posts of municipal presidents, followed by the Shiv Sena with 53 and the Nationalist Congress Party with 37. The Indian National Congress secured 28 posts, while the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) won seven and the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) accounted for nine municipal president positions.

After the state assembly polls, the ruling Mahayuti has secured a thumping majority with  207 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged as the single largest party.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday thanked the people of Maharashtra for supporting the BJP and the Mahayuti coalition led by it in the local bodies elections, asserting that it reflected their trust in people-centric development.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP head Ajit Pawar on Sunday thanked voters for reposing their faith in the party and its candidates in the municipal council and nagar panchayat elections, describing the mandate as a moment of pride and responsibility. In a statement, Pawar said the elections were not merely about victory but an affirmation of public trust, development-oriented governance and politics that prioritises people’s welfare.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday congratulated the BJP and NDA workers on the Mahayuti’s emphatic victory in the Maharashtra municipal council and nagar panchayat elections, calling it a testament to public trust in the alliance. In a post, Adityanath said the mandate reflected confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and thanked voters for blessing the Mahayuti with their support.

As per the latest trends, the Bharatiya Janata Party is all set to emerge as the single-largest party in the Maharashtra local body elections. At present, the party is leading in 129 out of 288 municipalities.

As the ruling Mahayuti is all set to clinch a massive victory in the Maharashtra local body elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated the people of Maharashtra. 

Through a post on X, Shah said, "Thanks to the people of the state for giving overwhelming support to the Mahayuti in the Maharashtra Nagar Panchayat and Nagar Parishad elections." 

"This victory is the people's blessings on the vision of the welfare of every section under the central and state governments of the NDA led by Modi ji. On this victory, I extend my best wishes to Chief Minister Shri @Dev_Fadnavis  ji, Deputy Chief Minister Shri  @mieknathshinde  ji, Shri  @AjitPawarSpeaks  ji, and all the workers of the NDA," he further added. 

He also thanked all the BJP workers and the party's state President, Ravindra Chavan, for the success.

The 'family pack' strategy of the Bharatiya Janata Party for the Loha municipal council polls in Nanded came undone as its candidate for post of president Gajanan Suryavanshi and his five kin lost. The post of president of Loha municipal council was won by Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party, whose candidate, incidentally, is named Sharad Pawar.

Reacting to the local body election results, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis thanked voters for what he called massive support to the BJP and the Mahayuti alliance, saying his prediction that 75% of municipal council chairpersons would come from the alliance had been borne out. Fadnavis said the BJP had clearly emerged as the number one party, with around 129 municipal council chairpersons elected from the party alone and a record 3,300 corporators winning on the BJP symbol, reflecting strong public backing. Congratulating allies Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, he said their parties had also performed well, matching the assembly poll results. He credited state BJP president Ravindra Chavan, former president Chandrashekhar Bawankule, cabinet colleagues and party workers for strong coordination between the organisation and the government, asserting that the outcome was better than 2017 and unprecedented in Maharashtra over the last three to three-and-a-half decades.

The opposition Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) on Sunday virtually conceded defeat in the elections to municipal councils and nagar panchayats, accusing the election commission of "facilitating" the victory of the ruling Mahayuti.

Maharashtra minister Shivendrasinh Bhosale on Sunday claimed BJP candidate Amol Mohite was elected municipal president in Satara district by 42,000 votes, an outcome that even surpassed the vote margins typically seen in assembly elections.

The BJP has won the president’s post in four out of five local bodies in Latur district, as results were being declared for the municipal councils and nagar panchayats polls conducted in two phases this month, officials said on Sunday.

Senior BJP leader and Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday congratulated party workers and leaders after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s strong performance in the municipal council and municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra. In a message, Gadkari praised state BJP president Ravindra Chavan and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, calling the outcome a victory of grassroots workers. Thanking voters for continuing to trust the BJP’s development-oriented approach, he said the mandate reflected public faith in the party’s governance and vision.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said the BJP had emerged as number one once again in the Maharashtra Municipal Council and Municipal Council Elections 2025, crediting the result to the leadership of Narendra Modi, the guidance of BJP national president JP Nadda, and the efforts of state BJP chief Ravindra Chavan and party workers. Congratulating all winning candidates and thanking voters for their support, Fadnavis said the mandate reflected public faith in the BJP’s governance agenda and asserted that the party would continue its push for uninterrupted development across the state.

Durgadevi Indrajit Jagdale of Nationalist Congress Party led by Ajit Pawar on Saturday won the mayoral election in the Daund Municipal Council in Pune district, defeating Monali Veer by a margin of 4,891 votes. Thanking voters for their support, Jagdale said the victory belonged to the people who trusted her with the mandate, and assured that she would work to live up to their expectations and fulfil the promises made during the campaign.

Shiv Sena candidate Om Prakash Khursaday on Saturday won the Malegaon Nagar Panchayat election in Washim district of Maharashtra, crediting the victory to the people’s support and blessings. Speaking after his win, Khursaday said the mandate belonged more to voters than to the party, noting that party leader Eknath Shinde had visited the area ahead of the polls to address a meeting, which helped energise workers and supporters during the campaign.

Final results of the municipal council elections in Dharashiv district have been declared, showing a clear dominance of the BJP and the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. However, local development alliances also made notable gains, particularly in Bhum, dealing a setback to national parties.

While political activity continues over the chairman’s post in Dharashiv Municipal Council, the BJP has secured clear majorities in Tuljapur, Naldurg and Murum. The Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) has retained control in Umarga, Kalamb and Paranda.

In contrast, local development alliances captured power in the Bhum Municipal Council, underlining the continued relevance of regional groupings in civic politics.

In Dharur in Beed district, Balasaheb Jadhav has won the mayoral post, consolidating the dominance of MLA Prakash Solanke in the local body polls. The result is being seen as a setback for the BJP, with sources indicating that the party’s candidate was defeated, causing disappointment in the camp of BJP minister Pankaja Munde. Out of the 20 corporators, 11 are from the NCP led by Ajit Pawar, three from the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, while six corporator candidates from the BJP have won. Counting has concluded for the Dharur municipal council.

In a closely fought contest that drew attention across Satara district, BJP candidate Shamsher Singh Naik Nimbalkar has won the Phaltan Municipal Council election. He defeated Aniket Raje Nimbalkar, son of Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) leader and MLA Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar. The victory is being seen as a significant setback for Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar’s camp, underscoring the BJP’s strong performance in a high-profile local contest.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) city president Jai Patil has won the Baramati Municipal Council elections for the fourth time. His opponent had to settle for just 200 votes. Jai Patil won for the fourth time and before that he had also served as the deputy mayor. 

Milan Kalyanshetti, brother of BJP MLA Sachin Kalyanshetti, is leading in Akkalkot, while Archana Rothe, sister of BJP MLA Pratap Adsad, is ahead in Dhamangaon.

In Murtizapur, Bhupendra, brother of BJP MLA Harish Pimple, is leading, and Chintan Patel, son of BJP MLA Amrish Patel, is ahead in Shirpur. Among NCP candidates, Mohini Naik, wife of Ajit Pawar’s minister Indranil Naik, is leading in Pusad.

Relatives of senior leaders are making a strong showing in the municipal council elections. In Jamner, Sadhana Mahajan, wife of BJP minister Girish Mahajan, has been elected unopposed as municipal council president. In Chalisgaon, Pratibha Chavan, wife of BJP MLA Mangesh Chavan, is leading in the mayoral race.

In Dondaicha, Nayanakuwar Rawal, mother of BJP minister Jaykumar Rawal, is ahead, while in Bhusawal, Rajni Savkare, wife of BJP minister Sanjay Savkare, is leading. In Khamgaon, Aparna, sister-in-law of BJP minister Akash Fundkar, is also ahead.

Trends from the first two hours of counting in Maharashtra’s municipal council elections indicate that the BJP has emerged as the single largest party. According to the trends, the BJP is set to secure municipal council president posts in 95 locations.

Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) is leading in 41 municipal councils, while the NCP headed by Ajit Pawar is ahead in 32. The Shiv Sena (UBT) faction is leading in eight councils, while the NCP led by Sharad Pawar is ahead in 11.

The Congress is leading in 26 municipal councils, positioning itself to secure presidential posts in these bodies. Independent candidates and local alliances are also showing strong performance, leading in more than 25 towns.

Early trends from the first hour of counting in Maharashtra’s local body elections show the BJP leading in 85 municipal council president posts. Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) is ahead in 41 municipal president posts, while the NCP led by Ajit Pawar is leading in 32.

Shiv Sena (UBT) candidates are ahead in 10 municipal president posts, while the NCP led by Sharad Pawar is leading in 12. Congress candidates have taken early leads in 16 municipal president posts. Independent candidates are also performing strongly, leading in 20 municipal president contests.

The strong room of the Trimbakeshwar Municipal Council has been opened and the counting of votes is underway.

Early trends from several local body seats in Maharashtra show candidates from various parties taking leads across constituencies. In Sillod, Shiv Sena candidate Sameer Sattar is leading, while in Kannad, Congress candidate Sheikh Fareen is ahead. In Paithan, UBT candidate Aparna Gorde has taken an early lead.

The BJP is leading in multiple seats, with Pradeep Patil ahead in Gangapur and Parshuram Bargal leading in Khuldabad. In Vaijapur, BJP candidate Dinesh Pardeshi is ahead based on postal ballot counting, while Suhas Shirsat is leading for the party in Phulambri.

The controversy erupted before counting formally began, with the MVA alleging procedural lapses. Bhavana Ghanekar, the MVA’s mayoral candidate, formally raised an objection over the incident.

Leaders and workers of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) objected to the contractor’s presence inside the strong room, questioning how he was allowed entry while carrying breakfast.

Tension broke out at the Uran municipal council counting centre near Navi Mumbai even before trends were announced, after a contractor allegedly entered the strong room ahead of the start of counting.

Early trends from municipal councils across Maharashtra show mixed outcomes for major parties. In Nagpur district, the BJP won the Vanadongari city council and it leads on the Kamathi seat. While the Shiv Sena is leading in Eat and Ramtek city councils.

In Dhule district, the BJP won the Dondaicha–Varwade City Council, while in Jalgaon district, the party leads in the Jamner City Council.

Police and administrative authorities have been put on high alert across all districts of Maharashtra to ensure law and order during the counting process.

The counting process has started with postal ballots. Officials said early trends are expected to emerge shortly.

BJP state president Ravindra Chavan said that 100 BJP candidates for municipal councils were elected unopposed even before voting began. Reflecting on the party’s 2017 performance, when it won 72 municipal councils, Chavan said the BJP is aiming to surpass that tally in the 2025 local body elections.

Results for two Nagar Parishads and one Nagar Panchayat were declared even before the start of counting. The BJP secured victories in Dondaicha–Varwade City Council in Dhule district, Jamner City Council in Jalgaon district, and Ungar Nagar Panchayat in Solapur district, all unopposed.

Counting of votes for all 286 municipal councils and nagar panchayats across Maharashtra is set to begin shortly. The results will provide a key test for the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), especially amid the ongoing splits and new alliances in the civic polls.

“The security arrangements have been reviewed,” said Jitendra Dudi, Collector and District Election Officer, highlighting the state’s preparedness for a smooth counting process.

In Pune district, 914 officers and staffers, including reserve personnel, have been deployed for the counting exercise. Adequate police presence has been ensured to maintain law and order, with preventive orders already issued.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed confidence in the ruling alliance’s prospects in the ongoing civic polls. “The Mahayuti alliance contested the Lok Sabha elections, it contested the assembly elections, and it will also contest the municipal elections, and the Mahayuti alliance will win,” he said, according to ANI.

In the 2017 municipal elections, Shiv Sena finished third. Ahead of the 2025 local body polls, the party is split into two factions, drawing heightened attention on which faction will outperform the other in key municipal councils and nagar panchayats.

Adding to the complexity of the contest, factions of the Congress have forged alliances with the BJP in a few regions, highlighting how local considerations have overridden traditional political rivalries in these elections.

In a notable development, the two rival factions of the Nationalist Congress Party, one led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and the other by party founder Sharad Pawar, have come together in Kolhapur, underscoring the fluid political equations seen in these local body polls.

The civic elections across Maharashtra have been marked by the fragmentation of existing alliances and the formation of new political combinations. The ruling BJP, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena campaigned aggressively, often against each other, reflecting tensions within the Mahayuti.

Voters can track the Maharashtra local body election results on the official websites of the State Election Commission at mahasec.maharashtra.gov.in and mahasecelec.in as counting progresses.

Polling began at 7.30 am across the state, with 47.04 per cent turnout recorded by afternoon in the second phase. Six wards in Nashik district, including Sinnar, Ozar and Chandwad, recorded a voter turnout of 49.47 per cent.

During polling, a brief disturbance was reported in Ward No 2 of Sinnar in Nashik district after a 25-year-old man was detained for allegedly attempting to vote by impersonating his brother using a fake Aadhaar card.

Prominent local bodies such as Baramati in Pune district and Ambernath in Thane district are among the key councils being closely watched, with results expected to offer early indicators ahead of the larger municipal corporation elections due next month.

The local body elections witnessed a direct contest between the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance and the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, with several seats also seeing friendly contests among alliance partners, including the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) and Ajit Pawar-led NCP.

Voting for the second phase of civic polls, covering 23 municipal councils and nagar panchayats along with 143 vacant posts, concluded on Saturday evening. Results for these seats will be declared along with the Phase 1 counts today.

The Maharashtra State Election Commission had earlier announced a final voter turnout of 67.63 per cent for the first phase of polling held on December 2, which covered 263 municipal councils and nagar panchayats.
