A dozen children have died in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan after consuming a toxic cough syrup. In response to the tragedy, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has promised a detailed inquiry followed by strict action against those responsible. The Chief Minister stated that 'whoever's responsible, they will be brought to book.' He also confirmed that three out of nineteen samples of the syrup failed quality tests. According to the Chief Minister, the doctor who prescribed the medicine was also the stockist for the company, and the medical store was registered in his wife's name, prompting the administration to take stringent action. As states begin to respond to the crisis, questions are being raised about whether earlier quality checks could have prevented the tragedy.
