A petition for the restoration of a beheaded seven-foot Vishnu idol in Khajuraho was dismissed by the Supreme Court, which stated the matter is under the jurisdiction of the ASI. During the hearing, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai reportedly remarked, "go pray to Vishnu himself". This oral observation led to a controversy, with organisations like the VHP stating that such remarks hurt the religious sentiments of people. The spokesperson for the VHP, Vinod Bansal, said, "such type of remarks, whatever is coming out from the courtroom, are definitely hurting the sentiments of the people of the country." Subsequently, the Chief Justice issued a clarification, stating he respects all religions and that his comments were portrayed in a certain way on social media.
