The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea from Justice Yashwant Varma challenging an internal committee's report related to a cash haul at his residence. The Chief Justice of India has recused himself from the case, stating, âI was part of decision making, I cannot hear this matter, will set up an appropriate benchâ. This development has no bearing on the separate impeachment proceedings initiated against the judge by Members of Parliament. Justice Varma's petition contends that the in-house proceedings were improper and that the committee's report was based on 'conjecture' and interpretation rather than direct evidence. A special bench will now be constituted to hear the matter.
