A political controversy has emerged in Karnataka after the Congress government invited Booker Prize-winning author Banu Mushtaq to inaugurate the Mysuru Dasara festival. The BJP has questioned the decision, citing the author's past statements about the Kannada language and flag, and her religious beliefs concerning the deity Chamundeshwari, who is worshipped during the festival. BJP MP Yadavir Wadiar stated to India Today that some of her sayings "have obviously not been in line with our sentiments." The Karnataka government has defended its invitation, asserting that the state festival is not viewed through the lens of caste or religion. Banu Mushtaq has responded to the controversy, expressing her happiness at receiving the invitation for what she considers a cultural festival.
