Maharashtra Municipal Election Result Highlights: Saffron sweep in civic polls, Latur cheap consolation for Congress

The Congress, which contested the polls in alliance with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, won elections to the Latur Municipal Corporation, bagging a clear majority with 43 seats in the 70-member body, leaving the BJP a distant second at 22.

In Nagpur, home turf of CM Fadnavis and Union minister Nitin Gadkari, results showed the Congress struggling to make significant inroads despite an aggressive campaign.

Results of all the 151 seats in the 151-member Nagpur civic body have been declared. The BJP got 102 seats, while the Congress got 34 seats.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has swept the polls in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. As of now, the counting has been concluded in 150 wards, and the BJP has won 100 seats. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena has bagged two. 

Among the opposition parties, the Congress has put up a slightly better show with 35 seats.

In the Thane Municipal Corporation, the dominance of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena remained intact as the BJP-Sena alliance emerged victorious with 103 seats, with Shiv Sena emerging as the single largest party with 75 seats. The BJP has won 28 seats as of now. Among the 131 wards, counting has been completed in 128 wards.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged as the single largest party in the Pune Municipal Corporation, grabbing 123 wards out of 165 seats. 

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Nationalist Congress Party Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP), which came together, failed to impress, as they together won just 25 seats.

In the Mumbai Civic Body elections, the BJP-Shiv Sena has won 114 seats, touching the majority mark as of now. Till now, the results have been declared in 221 wards, and the alliance has bagged 114 out of them.

The Indian National Congress, which contested the BMC polls alone, has won 23 seats till now. 

Following the poor performance of the Maharashtra and Mumbai Civic Polls, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut took a jibe at Eknath Shinde, claiming that had he not betrayed Shiv Sena, Mumbai would not have got a BJP mayor. 

He also addressed Shinde as Jaichand, a king who betrayed Prithviraj Chauhan.

In his press conference, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that he and his party do not care about who will become the Mayor of Mumbai. Instead, they are concerned about the electoral choice that the people of Mumbai and Maharashtra have made. 

Addressing a press conference, Shinde said that the Prime Minister has a dream to make Mumbai the fintech capital, and all of them will work together to make the dream a reality. He also said that Shiv Sena wants Mumbai to be a significant part in India's 5 trillion economy goals.

Following the massive success in Maharashtra and Mumbai Civic Polls, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated party colleagues.

"The emphatic verdict in Maharashtra’s municipal elections is a strong endorsement of the BJP-led NDA Mahayuti and its commitment to development-driven governance. This mandate reflects the people’s trust in the BJP’s vision and pro-people policies under the leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi ji. I congratulate Maharashtra Chief Minister @Dev_Fadnavis, Deputy Cgief Minister Shri @mieknathshinde and State BJP President Shri @RaviDadaChavan. I would also like to commend every BJP Karyakarta for their efforts on the ground, which have contributed to this outstanding result," he wrote on X.

The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance has swept the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. BJP has emerged as the single largest party by grabbing 65 seats, followed by Shiv Sena (Shinde) with 44. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the success of the BJP-Sena alliance in the Maharashtra Civic Body polls. He said that the people of Maharashtra voted in the name of Mahayuti's good governance and welfare schemes. 

"Thank you, Maharashtra! The enthusiastic people of the state have blessed the NDA's agenda of public welfare and good governance! The results of various municipal corporation elections show that the bond between the NDA and the people of Maharashtra has become even stronger. The experience of our performance and the vision of development have touched the hearts of the people. I express heartfelt gratitude to all the people of Maharashtra. This mandate will give greater momentum to progress and is a celebration of the glorious culture connected with the state," he wrote.

Six Maharashtra Navanirman Sena candidates have registered their victory in the Mumbai local body polls.

Following the massive success in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu BJP leader Annamalai congratulated his colleagues in Maharashtra. 

"The people of Mumbai have spoken with crystal clarity! The historic victory of the Mahayuti alliance in the BMC elections is a resounding endorsement of development-first governance. From the grassroots of local bodies to the halls of the parliament, this is the Triple Engine that delivers real, tangible development for every citizen. The opposition was banking on the failed strategy of dividing Mumbaikars along linguistic and regional lines, a 20th-century relic the people soundly rejected. While our NDA government talks about development infrastructure, jobs, and growth, the opposition clung to an archaic narrative of regional animosity. Mumbaikars chose substance over divisiveness," he wrote on X.

The counting in the Mumbai Civic Body polls has been concluded in 187 seats. It will begin in 30 more seats. In 10 seats, the counting is stuck.

Following the massive victory in the Mumbai Civic Body elections, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his gratitude to the voters of Mumbai and Maharashtra. He also thanked his alliance partners as well as the senior leadership of the BJP.

He further noted that Mahayuti's flag will rise high in Mumbai from the present-day onwards.

On the massive success of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance in the Maharashtra Civic Body elections, BJP leader Pankaja Munde told ANI, "PM has done a lot for development in the country as well as Maharashtra. Similarly, a lot has been done by CM Devendra Fadnavis and our alliance. This is a victory of that."

Following the grand success in BMC, Shiv Sena (Shinde) leader Milind Deora hailed the people of Mumbai for driving a change. 

"As a Mumbaikar, I am grateful to the people of Mumbai for voting for change, accountability, and development, and not for the drama perpetuated by two brothers. Today, it's clear that there are only two brothers in Mumbai's politics: Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde. Their last name is development," he said as reported by ANI.

Following the grand success of the Mumbai Civic Body, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that Mumbaikars have largely voted in favour of development and rejected corruption. 

"People prefer development over corruption, anti-development," Shinde said over Mahayuti dominance.

Following the victory in the Mumbai Civic Body and the other 28 municipal corporations, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari congratulated Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Following the ruling Mahayuti sweep in Mumbai and Maharashtra, CM Devendra Fadnavis will visit the BJP headquarters in Mumbai. A grand fecilitation awaits him. 

Fadnavis has already spoken with state BJP chief over the victory.

The Thackeray dominance in Mumbai fell after 28 years, as India's financial capital witnessed the BJP-Sena sweep in BMC elections.

From Delhi, BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh described the Maharashtra civic poll trends as a “day of celebration”, saying voters across municipal corporations have endorsed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies, nationalism and vision of a developed India. He claimed the results reflect public rejection of forces “playing to Pakistan’s tune” and termed it a victory for nationalist forces. Chugh also took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of repeatedly questioning EVMs, elections and institutions instead of introspecting after defeats.

In Jalna, Shrikant Pangarkar, an accused in the Gauri Lankesh murder case, celebrated his victory after winning the Jalna Municipal Corporation election as an independent candidate. Visuals showed Pangarkar celebrating with supporters following the declaration of results, even as counting continued in other civic bodies across Maharashtra.

Organisers announced that Somnath Swabhiman Parv, earlier planned as a limited event, will now be observed across the country throughout the year. The decision was taken ahead of a meeting scheduled in Delhi to finalise the programme structure. The event was initially launched in Somnath for three days and later extended until January 15.

The Solapur contest was overshadowed by the Balasaheb Sarvade murder, which erupted over nomination withdrawal disputes on January 2. Despite the controversy and her incarceration along with family members, Shalan Shinde and the entire BJP panel secured a clean sweep. BJP leaders credited strong organisational backing and voter sympathy for the unexpected result in the North Solapur assembly segment.

In a dramatic result from Solapur, BJP candidate Shalan Shinde won the municipal election while in judicial custody, without campaigning. She secured victory in Ward 2 by a margin of 10,767 votes, defeating Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) candidate Afrin Pathan. Shalan Shinde is accused in the Balasaheb Sarvade murder case, which had sent political shockwaves across Maharashtra during the campaign.

Addressing a press conference on BMC poll results, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said acceptance of the BJP and NDA has steadily increased. Thanking Maharashtra’s voters and party workers, he said the Mumbai results indicate strong youth support for the Mahayuti. Trivedi added that voters have delivered a decisive response to what he termed negative politics during the civic election campaign.

Emotional visuals emerged from Jalgaon after Sarita Kolhe was seen hugging Mahayuti candidate Piyush Lalit Kolhe and breaking down in tears. In a remarkable outcome, three members of the Kolhe family, Lalit Kolhe, Sindhutai Kolhe and Piyush Lalit Kolhe, won their respective seats. Lalit Kolhe contested and won the election while lodged in jail, making the victory particularly striking.

With the Mahayuti set to sweep the Maharashtra civic elections, paving the way for a triple-engine government, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the acceptance of the NDA was gradually increasing. "Our victory in Mumbai shows that the youth have strongly supported the Mahayuti," Trivedi said.

It's now 2 pm. Here is a glance at the latest trends. Overall, trends from the 29 corporations show the BJP-Shiv Sena combine leading in over 1,200 seats. The Uddhav Sena-MNS alliance is leading in over 120 seats, while Ajit Pawar's NCP is ahead in 114 seats.

The trends of all 151 seats in the Nagpur municipal corporation are now out. The BJP is leading in 109 seats. In the last election held in 2017, the BJP emerged as the leading party by winning 108 seats, while the Congress secured just 29 seats.

Yogita Gawli, daughter of gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli, has lost the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, marking an unsuccessful electoral debut for the Gawli family's next generation in civic politics. Yogita Gawli contested the polls from ward 207 in the Byculla-Chinchpokli area on the ticket of the Akhil Bharatiya Sena (ABS), the regional party founded by her father, Arun Gawli.

Maharashtra minister Chandrakant Patil said early trends suggest a one-sided contest in favour of the BJP-led Mahayuti. Claiming the alliance could cross 125 seats in Pune, Patil said similar trends were visible in Mumbai, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Kolhapur and Sangli. He asserted that Mahayuti is set to form civic bodies in at least 28 of the 29 municipal corporations, with BJP leading most of them.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sunil Shinde said the results reflect the party’s deep roots in the area associated with Balasaheb Thackeray, Uddhav Thackeray, Aaditya Thackeray and Raj Thackeray. Thanking the Thackeray leadership, Shinde said the party’s nationalist stance and development work earned public support. He added that UBT would continue focusing on providing better civic services to citizens as counting progresses.

BJP leader Nitesh Rane has made a strong political statement amid ongoing Maharashtra civic body election counting, asserting that power in the state will rest with those who speak for Hindu interests.

“Whoever speaks for Hindu interests will rule Maharashtra, Jai Shri Ram,” Rane said, as trends showed the BJP and its allies leading in several municipal corporations. The remark comes at a time when civic poll results are shaping the state’s evolving political narrative.

In Mumbai Ward 165, Congress candidate Ashraf Azmi has emerged victorious. In Ward 163, Shaila Lande of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena has registered a victory, defeating Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Sangita Sawant. Shaila Lande is the wife of MLA Dilip Lande, and her win strengthens the Shinde faction’s presence in Mumbai as results continue to trickle in from multiple wards across the city.

Congress has taken a clear lead in the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, emerging as the single largest party with 26 seats. BJP is close behind with 22 seats, while Shiv Sena has won 9 seats and NCP has secured 3. Shiv Sena (UBT) has won 2 seats, with no representation so far for MNS or other smaller parties in the corporation.

A fierce contest is underway in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, where both BJP and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena are leading on 27 seats each. The civic body has a total of 111 seats, and with margins extremely narrow, the final outcome is expected to hinge on smaller parties and late-round counting. The race remains too close to call at this stage.

The BJP is consolidating its position in Ward 215 after the third round of counting. BJP candidate Santosh Dhale is leading by nearly 1,000 votes and has polled 6,254 votes so far. Congress candidate Bhavana Koli stands at 1,767 votes, while Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Kiran Balsaraf has received 5,218 votes, making BJP’s win here increasingly likely.

In Dahisar Ward No. 2, BJP candidate Tejasvi Ghosalkar has surged ahead in the first round of counting with 6,010 votes. Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Dhanashree Kolge is trailing with 2,316 votes, while Congress candidate Singh Nemka Girish has secured 147 votes so far. The early trend indicates a strong BJP lead in this key Mumbai ward.

Mumbai has reported its first declared result in the municipal elections. Congress has registered its first confirmed win, with Asha Kale winning from ward 184. She secured victory by 1,450 votes, defeating Shinde Sena candidate Vaishali Shewale and MNS candidate Parubai Katke. The win offers a morale boost for the Congress amid ongoing counting.

Nanded Municipal Corporation is witnessing a multi-cornered contest. The BJP is leading on 26 seats, while AIMIM has emerged as a strong player with leads on 14 seats. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Congress are leading on 10 seats each, indicating a fragmented mandate.

In Byculla ward 207, BJP candidate Rohidas Lokhande is leading by 234 votes after the first round. In ward 208, Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Ramakant Rahate has taken a clear lead with 4,331 votes over the Shiv Sena candidate. These wards remain under close watch.

After the second round of counting in ward 165, Congress candidate Ashraf Azmi is leading with 4,548 votes.

BJP candidate Rupesh Pawar is trailing with 3,784 votes, while candidates from BSP and NCP factions are further behind. Counting is ongoing.

In Dahisar’s ward 1, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) candidate Rekha Yadav is leading after the first round with 4,214 votes. She is ahead of Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Forum Parmar and Congress candidate Sheetal Mhatre. Further rounds will determine if the lead holds.

In ward 145, AIMIM candidate Khairunnisa Akbar Hussain is leading by 2,728 votes after the first round of counting. Detailed figures show a fragmented vote among Congress, NCP, Shiv Sena (UBT) and independent candidates, allowing AIMIM to take a clear early advantage in this ward.

Fresh updates from Pune Municipal Corporation show the BJP leading on 44 seats. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP is ahead on 13 seats, while Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) are yet to open their accounts. Pune continues to emerge as a major BJP stronghold.

In Malad’s ward 32, Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Geeta Bhandari is leading after the first round of counting.

She has polled 2,476 votes, ahead of Congress candidate Shreena Jiko Kinny with 2,207 votes. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena candidate trails in third place at this stage.

Charkop ward 20 is witnessing a tight contest between the BJP and the MNS.

BJP candidate Deepak (Bala) Tawde has secured 3,109 votes, narrowly ahead of MNS candidate Dinesh Salvi, who has polled 3,037 votes. The margin remains slim as counting continues.

In ward 135, BJP candidate Navnath Ban is leading by 506 votes after the first round, having secured 1,714 votes so far. The BJP is also leading in Charkop ward 19, where Shrikant Kavathankar is ahead by a margin of 3,381 votes over the Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate.

The BJP has taken a strong early lead in Panvel Municipal Corporation, leading on 13 seats. The Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) are leading on one seat each. With counting progressing, the BJP appears to be consolidating its position in this key Navi Mumbai–Raigad belt civic body.

In ward 202 of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Shraddha Jadhav is leading after early rounds of counting.

Jadhav is a former mayor, making this contest politically significant. Further rounds are expected to determine whether she can retain her lead.

BJP candidates have taken early leads in south Mumbai wards 214 and 215. Ajay Patil is leading in ward 214, while Santosh Dhale is ahead in ward 215. Counting is continuing, and margins may change as further rounds are completed in these closely watched BMC wards.
