Assembly Election 2026 Highlights: New BJP chief reviews poll preparations in 5 states at first strategy meet

Assembly Election 2026 Highlights: While Assembly elections are only slated to be held in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry this year, the political landscape of the entire country somewhat hinges on how voters across these four states and one union territory decide to exercise their franchise. The BJP has never held power in three of the four poll-bound states, namely Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. While the 'saffron party' has managed to make significant inroads into West Bengal's electoral politics over the past several years, it has failed to do so in the two southern states. However, the historic victory it secured in the Thiruvananthapuram civic body polls held in December is expected to revitalise its ambitious aim of emerging as a force to be reckoned with in the wide-ranging political landscape of southern India. Conversely, the ruling parties in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) coalition in Kerala are expected to give their everything to the fight as each of them will be contesting the 2026 Assembly elections to defend their only bastions.

West Bengal Assembly Election 2026: Ayushman Bharat would exclude over 90% residents, says Trinamool’s Abhishek Banerjee

Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday claimed that had the West Bengal government implemented the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, over 90 per cent of the state’s population would have been deprived of its benefits due to what he described as stringent eligibility conditions. Without directly referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent attack on the Trinamool government over the non-implementation of the central scheme during his recent visit to the state, Banerjee said Bengal’s own Swasthya Sathi health scheme was accessible to all as it came with no conditions.

"They claim that the Mamata Banerjee government has blocked the Ayushman Bharat scheme in Bengal. I want to tell people that you would be disqualified from the scheme if you own a smartphone or a TV, a motorcycle, a radio, or even if you have a concrete roof over your head. These conditions have been fixed by the Modi government," Banerjee said at the TMC Rana Sankalp Sabha (war resolve rally) in Purulia district. "But Swasthya Sathi comes with no such conditions, which is why its benefits are accessible to all," he said.

Citing a recent incident in Ganapathi area of Coimbatore, Annamalai said a young man was brutally attacked by a group allegedly intoxicated on ganja, and was saved only due to the timely intervention of local residents. He claimed the incident was part of a wider pattern, referring to similar cases reported recently from Thiruthani, Velachery, and Coimbatore.
