Women driving grassroots change in India's water conservation efforts

At the India Today Mumbai Conclave 2025, experts highlighted the pivotal role of women, often called “water wives,” in Maharashtra’s water conservation efforts. Rajendra Singh and Kiran Rao discussed how community-led initiatives, local ecosystem knowledge, and women’s leadership have revived rivers and strengthened water systems. They emphasised that India’s water crisis is largely man-made, and sustainable solutions require empowering local communities, recognising women’s contributions, and fostering self-reliance rather than relying solely on top-down government schemes.
