Yamuna water inundates Delhi Secretariat, water level reached 207 metres

Delhi faces a severe flood threat as the Yamuna river's water level reached 207.48 metres, crossing the danger mark. The situation draws comparisons to previous major floods in 1978 and 2023, with fears of a repeat of the 2023 deluge when the level hit a record 208.66 metres. Water released from Haryana's Hathnikund Barrage is a primary contributing factor. The flooding has impacted critical areas, including the road leading to the Delhi Secretariat, the seat of the city's government. Authorities are using sandbags and pumps, but the drainage and sewage systems are overwhelmed by backflow from the swollen river. The Met Department's forecast for more heavy rain could worsen the situation. To manage the flow, all gates at the Okhla Barrage have been opened to release water downstream.
